The Advanced Search page can be accessed by clicking the ADVANCED
SEARCH button in the navigation bar of any page.
The page is divided into four boxed areas in which search fields that will
produce the most useful results are grouped together. The four options are:
The Advanced Search fields within each boxed area can be used either singly
or in combination, unless otherwise stated. However, it is not possible to
combine fields from different areas.
When you have finished specifying the full criteria for your search, click
the SEARCH button in the appropriate area of the page or
press the Enter key to proceed with the search.
To perform a full-text search across The Europa World of Learning database, type
the search text in the Full text search term box and, when
you have finished specifying any other criteria, click SEARCH.
Geographical criteria can also be specified in conjunction with Full text
search (see Location).
Specify the scope of the search, i.e. the type of results you would like
to receive. One of three options can be selected: Institutions and
People (the default option), Institutions or People.
Specify the type of search you would like to perform. One of five options
can be selected:
Only find entries containing all of the words entered in the Full text
search term box. This is the default search type.
Find entries containing any of the words entered in the Full text search
term box.
Select this option if you are unsure of the exact spelling of the word
or name you wish to find. For example, searching for "Ciomsky" will also find
"Chomsky".
Select this option to expand a search to include semantically related terms.
Select this option to perform a search using Boolean operators (AND, OR,
NOT). For example, "Columbia NOT University" will find Columbia but not Columbia
University.
The following fields are available in the Institutions search area:
Geographical criteria can also be specified in conjunction with the Institutions
search (see Location).
To search for a particular institution, type its name - or a distinguishing
part thereof - in the Institution name box.
To restrict your search to a particular type of institution, select an
option from the drop-down list.
To search for institutions founded in a particular year, type the year
in the Year of Foundation box. Simple date ranges can also be entered, e.g.
"1998-2001".
The following fields are available in the People search area:
Geographical criteria can also be used in conjunction with the People search
(see Location).
To search for a particular person, type his or her family name and given
name (if known) in the Name box.
To search for academic staff who specialize in a particular subject, type
their specialization in the Subject box. This feature searches
The Europa World of Learning's "Subject Tree" (see Subjects)
for the specified term.
The Subject search should be used in preference to the Subjects browse
if the user wishes to specify a subject in conjunction with other criteria,
e.g. to search for professors of mathematics within the US state of California.
If searching in this way produces unsatisfactory results, type the subject
in the Full text search term box to search across
the entire database.
To search for institutional entries in which a particular publication title
appears, type the title in the Publications box. This field cannot be used
in conjunction with other criteria.
The following geographical fields can be used in conjunction with Full text search, Institutions search
or People search:
To restrict your search to a predefined supranational region, select an
option from the drop-down list, e.g. Africa, Central Africa or East Africa.
To define your own grouping of countries, see Country.
To restrict your search to a particular country or territory, select an
option from the drop-down list.
To broaden the search to two or more countries, click ADD ANOTHER
COUNTRY before making each additional selection from the list. This
feature can be used to customize regions if the predefined ones are unsatisfactory
(see World Region).
